LASIK eye treatment

January 22nd, 2009

LASIK eye treatment is a type of laser eye treatment used by many who want to stop having to wear glasses or contact lenses.

LASIK stands for “Laser in situ keratomileusis” and is performed by an Ophthalmologist who uses it to correct myopia (short sight) , hyperopia (long sight) and astigmatism.

LASIK is a laser refractive eye treatment and is considered in general non-essential meaning that it is not usually available on the NHS and so patients who want this surgery performed will have to go private.

In terms of laser eye correction LASIK is the most commonly performed surgery. It may not however be suitable for those who have a very high degree of short sightedness.

LASIK eye treatments basically have the surgeon cut across the Cornea and raise up a flap, then with the Excimer laser they can re-shape what is left underneath before the flap is then replaced.

This form of eye treatment has been taking place since 1991 and has seen the procedure improved and the reliability also improved meaning less chance of complications.
